I am trying to find a yum file that is very common in many packages.
A file is usually part of one package and one alone. A file owned by several packages would mean something went seriously wrong when packaging.
If you mean by "owned by many packages" that many contain a file named this way but in different paths (i.e. "/pkg1/commonname", "/pkg2/commonname", ...): you can search for certain paths like this:
I am setting up a new server with the goal of porting a solaris server to centos. I want to compile some packages myself (ie) http, ssl, mysql, etc. The reason for this is the downloadable rpm packages are very old. I probably want to make sure the kernel is up to date, but the individual pages... (2 Replies)

Hi,
I would like to know the difference between YUM UPDATE and YUM UPGRADE. The man pages say upgrade is same as update with the obsolete option. And by default it says the obsolete option is turned on, which would make them equivalent. Does not say what obsolete does.
Can someone please... (3 Replies)

yum-builddep - install missing dependencies for building an RPM package
SYNOPSIS
yum-builddep package
DESCRIPTION
yum-builddep is a program which installs the RPMs needed to build the specified package. The source RPM for the specified package must be
available in a Yum repository (which will be automatically enabled, if it is disabled) or it can be a local source RPM file.
EXAMPLES
Download and install all the RPMs needed to build the kernel RPM:
yum-builddep kernel
FILES
As yum-builddep uses YUM libraries for retrieving all the information, it relies on YUM configuration for its default values like which
repositories to use. Consult YUM documentation for details:
/etc/yum.conf
/etc/yum/repos.d/
/var/cache/yum/

BUGS
There are of course no bugs, but should you find any, you should first consult the FAQ section on http://yum.baseurl.org/wiki/Faq and if
unsuccessful in finding a resolution contact the mailing list: yum-devel@lists.baseurl.org. To file a bug use http://bugzilla.redhat.com
