JAVA can be installed anywhere. I'd expect JAVA to have a thread taking sigchld calls.

Walk the tree back to 1 to see how the zombie got launched.

How to kill zombie process

I have RHES4 machine with VRTSralus - Backup Exec agent installed there and running as a service. The agent hiccups sometimes and turns into defunct state.
