Bash script to detect nonpingable hosts
I have a script to detect if a host is pingable or not. The problem is that I would like it to put the nonpingable hosts in one file and the pingable hosts in another. I have come up with this so far:

for ip in `cat /tmp/testlist2`; do ping -c 3 $ip >/dev/null && echo "$ip is up" || echo "$ip is down"; done>/tmp/s4.file
cat /tmp/s4.file |grep -i down >/tmp/f1.file
cat /tmp/s4.file |grep -i up >/tmp/sup.file

This works but it is clumsy. If I try to just do a redirect after the ping it doesn't work, though. What I get is only the first host name that the ping is tried on. Would I need another loop to get the hosts in two different files? Any suggestions?

NAME

       rplay.hosts - rplay host authentication database

SYNOPSIS

       /usr/local/etc/rplay.hosts

DESCRIPTION

       The  rplay.hosts  file contains a list of hosts and access permissions which rplayd uses to validate incoming connections.  Each line is of
       the form:

	      hostname[:permission]

       where

       hostname       is the name of a remote host or a host's IP address.  Wildcards can be used within IP addresses  to  match  multiple  hosts.
		      The wildcard character is "*".

       permission     is an optional field containing any combination of the following characters:

		      r  the host can read sounds.

		      w  the host can write sounds.

		      x  the host can play, stop, pause, and continue sounds.  This is normally called execute permission.

		      m  the host can monitor the audio stream written by rplayd to the audio device.

       "rx" permissions are used when no permissions are specified.

BUGS

       The permissions for an "*" entry apply to all matching hosts.  The order of this file does not matter.  Specific hosts can have access dis-

       however, any matching "*" entries will still apply.
