I want to merge two lines in a file till the end of the file. So what could be the command to get so.
say file name : sample.txt
contents:
country=1
send apps =1 rece=2
country=2
send apps =3 rece=3
..
...
output:
country=1;send apps =1 rece=2

I want to merge the lines starting with a comma symbol with the previous line of the file.
Input :
cat file.txt
name1,name2
,name3,name4
emp1,emp2,emp3
,emp4
,emp5
user1,user2
,user3
Output
name1,name2,name3,name4

I have a large file where some lines have been split into two lines; some of them even with white spaces before the second line. e.g in the following text I want to merge only specific lines ( say UNIX is cool), also removing white spaces only between them, others shall remain same on the output.... Could somebody help me write a script or command that will look through a file and for every line that doesn't contain a certain value, merge it with the one above?
For example, the file contains:
SCOTLAND|123|ABC|yes
SCOTLAND|456|DEF|yes

Hi everyone,
I have two files (A and B) and want to combine them to one by always taking 10 rows from file A and subsequently 6 lines from file B. This process shall be repeated 40 times (file A = 400 lines; file B = 240 lines).
Does anybody have an idea how to do that using perl, awk or sed?... (6 Replies)

Thanks it worked for me. I have one more question on top of that. We had few records which were splitted in 2 lines instead of one. Now i identified those lines. The file is too big to open via vi and edit it. How can i do it without opening the file.

I do have a text file with multiple lines on it. I want to put the lines of text into a single line where ever there is ";"
for example
ert, ryt, yvig,
fgr;
rtyu, hjk, uio,

merge - three-way file merge SYNOPSIS
merge [ options ] file1 file2 file3 DESCRIPTION
merge incorporates all changes that lead from file2 to file3 into file1. The result ordinarily goes into file1. merge is useful for com- bining separate changes to an original. Suppose file2 is the original, and both file1 and file3 are modifications of file2. Then merge combines both changes. A conflict occurs if both file1 and file3 have changes in a common segment of lines. If a conflict is found, merge normally outputs a warning and brackets the conflict with <<<<<<< and >>>>>>> lines. A typical conflict will look like this: <<<<<<< file A lines in file A ======= lines in file B >>>>>>> file B If there are conflicts, the user should edit the result and delete one of the alternatives. OPTIONS
-A Output conflicts using the -A style of diff3(1), if supported by diff3. This merges all changes leading from file2 to file3 into file1, and generates the most verbose output. -E, -e These options specify conflict styles that generate less information than -A. See diff3(1) for details. The default is -E. With -e, merge does not warn about conflicts. -L label This option may be given up to three times, and specifies labels to be used in place of the corresponding file names in conflict reports. That is, merge -L x -L y -L z a b c generates output that looks like it came from files x, y and z instead of from files a, b and c. -p Send results to standard output instead of overwriting file1. -q Quiet; do not warn about conflicts. -V Print RCS's version number. It normally does not make sense to merge binary files as if they were text, but merge tries to do it anyway. GNU
