In general, the answer is to read the man pages. But as a high altitude first cut, any unquoted argument passed to the shell that is not a parameter expansion (i.e., $name or ${...name...} that is not part of a shell command lanuage construct (e.g., if, then, else, fi, case, esac, ...) will be subject to pathname expansion.

       suspend - shell built-in function to halt the current shell

SYNOPSIS

   sh
       suspend

   csh

DESCRIPTION

   sh
       Stops the execution of the current shell (but not if it is the login shell).

   csh
       Stop the shell in its tracks, much as if it had been sent a stop signal with ^Z. This is most often used to stop shells started by su.
