How exactly are you running the script?
With copy and paste I mean the other way around, copy it from this website and paste it into a file on which you can test your script..
also
what happens if there are 4 lines in your inout file?

I use the cat command to concatenate text files, but one of the rows I was expecting doesn't display in the output file. Is there a verbose mode\logging mechanism for the cat command to help me investigate where the lines I was expecting are going??

I have a file

When I cat this file content to a variable inside a shell script and echo that shell script, it does not show up as separate lines. I need echo output similar to cat.

SYNOPSIS
paste [OPTION]... [FILE]...
DESCRIPTION
Write lines consisting of the sequentially corresponding lines from each FILE, separated by TABs, to standard output. With no FILE, or
when FILE is -, read standard input.
Mandatory arguments to long options are mandatory for short options too.
-d, --delimiters=LIST
reuse characters from LIST instead of TABs
-s, --serial
paste one file at a time instead of in parallel
--help display this help and exit

output version information and exit
