Difference in conflict resolving between yum and rpm installs
Hi Guys,
I am trying to test installation of a local rpm to my RHEL5 server. I am expecting it to fail as a previous version of the same package name exists. On using rpm -i this behaves as expected but yum install does not pick up the conflict. Here is the element of my SPEC file with the conflict logic -
Any ideas why yum install works? This is what our platform team use to deploy. I am expecting a failed dependency. Is it something to do with me trying to install the rpm locally? I have been going round in circles with this and just can't work out why they are behaving differently.
Thanks.
G.

I am setting up a new server with the goal of porting a solaris server to centos. I want to compile some packages myself (ie) http, ssl, mysql, etc. The reason for this is the downloadable rpm packages are very old. I probably want to make sure the kernel is up to date, but the individual pages... (2 Replies)

Hi,
I notice that CENTOS has a yum upgrade and update option. The man pages say that upgrade is the same as update with the obsolete option on. What is the obsolete option? I do not really understand the man page's description of it.

extern int a3;
void prnt_a3()
{
printf("\n%d\n",a3);

yum-versionlock - Version lock rpm packages
SYNOPSIS
yum-versionlock [ package-name [ package-name]] ...
DESCRIPTION yum-versionlock(1) is a Yum plugin that takes a set of name/versions for packages and excludes all other versions of those packages
(including optionally following obsoletes). This allows you to protect packages from being updated by newer versions.
The plugin provides a command "versionlock" which allows you to view and edit the list of locked packages easily.
yum versionlock add <package-wildcard>...
Add a versionlock for all of the packages in the rpmdb matching the given wildcards. yum versionlock exclude <package-wildcard>...
Add a exclude (within versionlock) for the latest versions of the packages in the available repos. matching the given wildcards. yum ver-
sionlock list
List the current versionlock entries. yum versionlock delete <entry-wildcard>...
Remove any matching versionlock entries. yum versionlock clear
Remove all versionlock entries.
FILES
/etc/yum/pluginconf.d/versionlock.conf
The system wide configuration file. See yum-versionlock.conf(5) for more information.
/etc/yum/pluginconf.d/versionlock.list
The default place to put package version lock information (one package and version per. line). The file takes entries in the follow-
ing format EPOCH:NAME-VERSION-RELEASE.ARCH See rpm(8) for more information on custom query formats. If the package does not have an
EPOCH the number will default to 0.
