{}_`date +%F`.gz ...
Why don't you move in one go :
This doesn't work at all :File or directory missing
Thanks any way.

I'm trying to see which files have a particular word in them.

In order to view the content of a single gzipped file I tried:
cat filename | gzip -d | less , and it shows the files contents.
But, I want to see a list... (1 Reply)

the following command might do it as some shells spit it without the "exec bash -c " part:

Hi All,
I have a random test file: test.txt, size: 146
$ ll test.txt
$ 146 test.txt
Take 1:
$ cat test.txt | gzip > test.txt.gz
$ ll test.txt.gz
$ 124 test.txt.gz
Take 2:
$ gzip test.txt

$ 133 test.txt.gz

zgrep
ZGREP(1) General Commands Manual ZGREP(1)NAME
zgrep - search possibly compressed files for a regular expression
SYNOPSIS
zgrep [ grep_options ] [ -e ] pattern filename...
DESCRIPTION
Zgrep invokes grep on compressed or gzipped files. These grep options will cause zgrep to terminate with an error code:
(-[drRzZ]|--di*|--exc*|--inc*|--rec*|--nu*). All other options specified are passed directly to grep. If no file is specified, then the
standard input is decompressed if necessary and fed to grep. Otherwise the given files are uncompressed if necessary and fed to grep.
If the GREP environment variable is set, zgrep uses it as the grep program to be invoked.
EXIT CODE
2 - An option that is not supported was specified.
