I am trying to figure out a way in nawk to 1) get a count of the number of times a value appears in field 1 and 2) count each time the same value appears in field 2 for each value of field 1. So for example, if I have a text file with the following:
grapes, purple
apples, green
squash, yellow
grapes, green
apples, red
squash, green,
grapes, red
apples, yellow
squash, green
I want to figure out how many times each color occurs for each type of fruit. There may be new fruit thrown in the file from time to time so i don't have a hard-and-fast list of the fruit and would need the script to be able to adjust for new fruit.
I have tried making changes to the following code, but I keep getting syntax errors:

ok, so a user can specify options as is shown below:
ExA:
cpu.pl!23!25!-allow
or
ExB:
cpu.pl!23!25!-block!all
options are delimited by the exclamation mark.
now, in example A, there are 4 options provided by the user.
in example B, there are 5 options provided by the user.

so its common knowledge one can print multiple fields with simple commands like this:
echo 12 44 45 552 24 | awk '{print $1,$4,$3}'
but suppose i want to avoid specifying the "$" symbol. is that possible? can something like this be done:
echo 12 44 45 552 24 | awk '{print $(1,4,3)}'

ppmdither - ordered dither for color images
SYNOPSIS
ppmdither [-dim power] [-red shades] [-green shades] [-blue shades] [ppmfile]
DESCRIPTION
Reads a portable pixmap as input, and applies dithering to it to reduce the number of colors used down to the specified number of shades
for each primary. The default number of shades is red=5, green=9, blue=5, for a total of 225 colors. To convert the image to a binary rgb
format suitable for color printers, use -red 2 -green 2 -blue 2.
OPTIONS -dim power The size of the dithering matrix. The dithering matrix is a square whose dimension is a power of 2. power is that power of
2. The default is 4, for a 16 by 16 matrix.
-red shades The number of red shades to be used, including black; minimum of 2.
-green shades The number of green shades to be used, including black; minimum of 2.
-blue shades The number of blue shades to be used, including black; minimum of 2.
