I tested it before posting, it does nothing of the sort.

Code:
$ printf "\t\t\t\nabc\n" | awk '/[^\t]/'

abc

$

You're not typing this into Windows CMD, are you? That botch of a pseudo-shell has horrific quoting issues and will scramble much of what you type into it. Be sure to use a real shell like bash or ksh or zsh or... anything but windows CMD.

NAME

       suspend - shell built-in function to halt the current shell

SYNOPSIS

   sh
       suspend

   csh
       suspend

   ksh
       suspend

DESCRIPTION

   sh
       Stops the execution of the current shell (but not if it is the login shell).

   csh
       Stop the shell in its tracks, much as if it had been sent a stop signal with ^Z. This is most often used to stop shells started by su.

   ksh
