search condition in awk

I am testing few existing scripts in our environment as we have migrating from redhat linux 4 to 5 & above.

I am stuck up with one of the script where the search condition is
Code:
/[^[:blank:]]+[[:blank:]]+([[:digit:]\.]+[[:blank:]]+){7,}/

the script works fine when i remove {7,} in the search condition if i add this it does not show any results.

Can some one let me know what does this search condition does and what does the {7,} implies the output before and after seems to be the same and i am assuming that 7 is the number of columns in the passwd file.

You can test in this way
Code:
cp /etc/passwd /tmp/passwd
replace the columns with blanks :/^v/:/ /g in the /tm/passwd file

awk 'BEGIN {FS=":"} $1 ~ /[^[:blank:]]+[[:blank:]]+([[:digit:]\.]+[[:blank:]]+){7,}/ /tmp/passwd

Please let me know if someone knows how the search condition works

SLAPD-PASSWD(5) File Formats Manual SLAPD-PASSWD(5)

NAME
slapd-passwd - /etc/passwd backend to slapd SYNOPSIS
/etc/openldap/slapd.conf DESCRIPTION
The PASSWD backend to slapd(8) serves up the user account information listed in the system passwd(5) file. This backend is provided for demonstration purposes only. The DN of each entry is "uid=<username>,<suffix>". Note that non-base searches scan the entire passwd file, and are best suited for hosts with small passwd files. CONFIGURATION
This slapd.conf option applies to the PASSWD backend database. That is, it must follow a "database passwd" line and come before any subse- quent "backend" or "database" lines. Other database options are described in the slapd.conf(5) manual page. file <filename> Specifies an alternate passwd file to use. The default is /etc/passwd. ACCESS CONTROL
The passwd backend does not honor any of the access control semantics described in slapd.access(5). Only read (=r) access to the entry pseudo-attribute and to the other attribute values of the entries returned by the search operation is honored, which is performed by the frontend. FILES
