how to remove "^J" in a variable

Hi
i have a strange thing i have made a script to retrieve the result of an SQL command with sqlplus and if i do an echo to my variable it displays well.
But when i tried to do an update in my oracle table there is a special character at the beginning of my variable.

here is how i have detected in unix the strange char

       strange	[-display  host:display.screen]  [-foreground  color]  [-background  color]  [-window] [-root] [-mono] [-install] [-visual visual]

       The strange program draws strange attractors

OPTIONS

       strange accepts the following options:

       -window Draw on a newly-created window.	This is the default.

       -root   Draw on the root window.

       -mono   If on a color display, pretend we're on a monochrome display.

       -install
	       Install a private colormap for the window.

       -visual visual
	       Specify which visual to use.  Legal values are the name of a visual class, or the id number (decimal or hex) of a specific visual.

       -ncolors integer
	       How many colors should be used (if possible).  Default 100.  The colors are chosen randomly.

       -fps    Display the current frame rate and CPU load.
