A bit late to figure out what you were doing wrong now, but deleting a symlink is easy:

Code:
$ ln -s / ./root
$ ls -l ./root
lrwxrwxrwx 1 username users 1 Dec  1 14:03 ./root -> /
$ rm ./root
$
