As stated by rbatte1 - you must be root to install software like this on a UNIX system. Not only is the rpm file permissions owned by root but the directories where it will be placed are owned and controlled by root. Have your UNIX Admin do the install and you should be able to do what is needed after that.

I tried to install apache web server on solaris 8 and was prompted that i do not have any valid compiler.
I tried to install GCC on solaris 8 using the command

I download 5 rpm packages from IBM AIX Toolbox Download Page - Alphabetical Listing and install them.
rpm -ivh gcc-4.0.0-1.aix5.3.ppc.rpm

Hi,
I have problem to build the gcc-3.2.3. I downloaded the source code. Here is what I did.
1) cd /usr/local/src
2) tar zxf gcc-3.2.3.tar.gz
3) cd ..
4) mkdir gcc-3.2.3
5) cd gcc-3.2.3
6) ../src/gcc-3.2.3/configure --prefix=/usr/local/gcc-3.2.3/
7) make

DESCRIPTION
The pinion program draws an interconnected set of gears moving across the screen.
OPTIONS
pinion accepts the following options:
-window Draw on a newly-created window. This is the default.
-root Draw on the root window.
-install
Install a private colormap for the window.
-visual visual
Specify which visual to use. Legal values are the name of a visual class, or the id number (decimal or hex) of a specific visual.
-delay usecs
The delay between frames of the animation, in microseconds: default 15000.
-spin ratio
How fast the gears should spin; default 1.0. 2.0 means twice as fast, 0.5 means half as fast.
-scroll ratio
How fast the gears should scroll past the screen; default 1.0. 2.0 means twice as fast, 0.5 means half as fast.
-size ratio
How big the gears should be, on average; default 1.0. 2.0 means twice as large, 0.5 means half as large.
-max-rpm integer
If any gear exceeds the maximum RPM, the current gear train is broken there, and we start a new train. Default: 900 RPM. (At 30
