Difference between Mac and IP addresses

Difference between Mac and IP addresses
If a web search is done on this topic there are many links but no information included in the documents. So my questions are;
Why does a NIC card have it's own permanent ID. Why can't it share the host name? An ID is an ID.
Why does a computer need two ways to ID it.
If the network needs to have data carried with the packets in order for the network to navigate the packet it makes sense but no other reason does.
This must be a mostly misunderstood concept judging from the amount of "what is the differerence between a Mac and IP address" links so thanks for your patients and thanks in advance.

I am training to be support on our solaris based network and was wondering why solaris seems to assign the same mac address to all NICs placed in the machine regardless of how many NICs are in there, when i do a ifconfig -a all nics have same MAC.

Can anybody tell me which command i can use to find MAC address if you know IP address of the machine.

Lets make it simple :)
Using a bash script, how to grep only the ip address and the mac address and put them in a file:.
for example from the dhcp.conf file we got such things:

In the awk I am trying to subtract the difference $3-$2 of each matching $4 before the first _ (underscore) and print that value in $13.
I think the awk will do that, but added comments. What I am not sure off is how to add a line or lines that will add sum each matching $13 value and put it in... (2 Replies)

rovclock - utility to control frequency rates of your Radeon card SYNOPSIS
rovclock [options] DESCRIPTION
This manual page documents briefly the rovclock command. This manual page was written for the Debian distribution because the original program does not have a manual page. rovclock is a program that allow you to control frequency rates of your Radeon card. OPTIONS
A summary of options is included below. -i Show info of your Radeon card. -x N Manually define xtal frequency to N KHz. It tries to detect the reference clock (xtal) from the video BIOS, if this doesn't work you can specify it manually with -t. Try 1432 or 2950 if the default value of 2700 does not work. -c N Set core clock to N MHz. -m N Set memory clock to N MHz. -t name:val Set memory timings. SEE ALSO
