Thanks for your alternative solution which is somewhat not what I want but thanx anyway. Your version only differentiates each line as a contig and not a continuation of specific characters as is possible with the Perl version.

the awk should remove 'te' only if it is present at the start of the string.. anywhere else it should ignore it.

SYNOPSIS
nice [OPTION] [COMMAND [ARG]...]
DESCRIPTION
Run COMMAND with an adjusted niceness, which affects process scheduling. With no COMMAND, print the current niceness. Nicenesses range
from -20 (most favorable scheduling) to 19 (least favorable).
-n, --adjustment=N
add integer N to the niceness (default 10)
