strtok can do the job fairly easily and does support mutiple tokens. check out flex. it's built for tasks like this if your allowed to use it. what is your desired output?

I have a job script that runs with input parms from the command line.
job.sh -p parm1_parm2_parm3_parm4_file_1.dat
The parms are separated by _
The last parm is a file name and can have an _ in the name.
I currently use the following commands to extract the parms

Generates programs that perform pattern-matching on text.
Table Compression:
-Ca, --align
trade off larger tables for better memory alignment
-Ce, --ecs
construct equivalence classes
-Cf do not compress tables; use -f representation
-CF do not compress tables; use -F representation
-Cm, --meta-ecs
construct meta-equivalence classes
-Cr, --read
use read() instead of stdio for scanner input
-f, --full
generate fast, large scanner. Same as -Cfr
