arg list too long error

I'm on Solaris (said that in the first post). I don't know much about the hardware other than it's on slower disks than production. I can find out more if needed. It takes about 7-8 minutes for one day's worth of data. I have to run this for 7 days at one time so it should take about 49-56 minutes to complete. I realize that since I'm searching so many files that there might not be a way to make this run faster and that's fine. Just thought I'd ask 
I'm still fairly new to unix and scripting.

I do ls -l ABC*, I get arg list too long message. This will not happen if ABC* has small no of files I believe 4000 files is limit. Any way of avoiding this.
I even tried like this
for i in `ls -l ABC*`
do
echo $i
done
Same problem.
Any solution would be great.

echo dirname/filename* | xargs ls -t
As a substitute doesn't give the results desired when I exceed the buffer size. I still want the files listed in chronological order, unfortunately xargs releases the names piecemeal...does anyone have any ideas? :( (4 Replies)

Hey guys. I have a program written in which i am trying to get the files from one remote machine and transferring the files to another remote machine using SCP.
It works fine for 50 or 60 files but when the files grows to 250 then i get an error message stating "Arg list too long".

Help. I have a file that contains a list of users in a file. I want to cat the content of the file and feed it into sed to a preformated report. The error I got is "ksh: /usr/bin/sed: arg list too long" My method below.

timetrans - Converts time into time SYNOPSIS
timetrans [units-options] [-count] DESCRIPTION
timetrans converts time from one type of unit to another. If any of the units options are specified, then timetrans will convert those time units into the number of seconds to which they add up. If given the count option, timetrans will convert that number of seconds into the appropriate number of weeks, days, hours, minutes, and seconds. The converted result is printed out. Units options cannot be specified in the same execution as the count option, and vice versa. timetrans is intended for use with DNSSEC-Tools, for calculating a zone's expiration time. OPTIONS
Units Options The converted value of each unit is totaled and a single result printed. -seconds seconds Count of seconds to convert to seconds. -minutes minutes Count of minutes to convert to seconds. -hours hours Count of hours to convert to seconds. -days days Count of days to convert to seconds. -weeks weeks Count of weeks to convert to seconds. Count Option The specified seconds count is converted to the appropriate number of weeks, days, hours, minutes, and seconds. -count seconds Count of seconds to convert to the appropriate set of units.
