The easiest way is to use 'tr' for this:

tr '\12' ' ' <input_file >output_file

Unfortunately this also removes the last newline, so output_file does not end with a newline character. If this is a problem, you can do:

(tr '\12' ' ' <input_file ; echo) >output_file
