Batch rename files after internal search pattern
Hello all

I am trying to do a script that would allow me to mass rename files after a grep search within them. They are XML files and the pattern I would like to append to the file name is easy to find (e.g. <filename>foo</filename>), but I can't for the life of me find out how to do it and couldn't find a similar request, although I guess this could be useful in a number of situations.

So, I understand I will have to have a loop like

for file in file_name* ; do mv $file $file$variable.xml ; done

The issues are:
1. how to grep the relevant part of each file and parse the relevant bit of that pattern
2. whether my assumption above would work
3. if so, how to redirect what I get in 1. that into the variable above

I am very new to shell scripting, but enjoying a lot it's power so far.

NAME

       zgrep - search possibly compressed files for a regular expression

SYNOPSIS

       zgrep [ grep_options ] [ -e ] pattern filename...

DESCRIPTION

       Zgrep  invokes  grep  on  compressed  or  gzipped  files.   These  grep	options  will  cause  zgrep  to  terminate  with  an  error  code:
       (-[drRzZ]|--di*|--exc*|--inc*|--rec*|--nu*).  All other options specified are passed directly to grep.  If no file is specified,  then  the
       standard input is decompressed if necessary and fed to grep.  Otherwise the given files are uncompressed if necessary and fed to grep.

       If the GREP environment variable is set, zgrep uses it as the grep program to be invoked.

EXIT CODE

       2 - An option that is not supported was specified.
