Its the
initd process which inherites whose pid == 1. The
root is just a user profile id which happens to be the default superuser of a system and NOT a process.

Whenever i switch from root to another user, by doing su - user, it takes me to home directory of user. This is very annoying as i want to be in same dir to run different commands as root sometimes and sometimes as normal user.

getpid(), getpgid(), getpgrp(), getpgrp2(), getppid() - get process, process group and parent process ID.
SYNOPSIS
DESCRIPTION
These functions return process, process group and parent process IDs, as follows:
Process group ID of the specified process.
If pid is zero, the call applies to the calling process. Same result as
Process group ID of the calling process.
