if you want to be sure of the date and format, you could just use a case statement and assign prev month based on whatever month it is.
something like
month=`date "+%y %m %d" | awk {'print $2'}` <-- i cant validate syntax, don't have a unix box on me right now
case $month
01) prevmonth=12 ;;
02) prevmonth=01 ;;
....
12) prevmonth=11 ;;
esac
again, cant validate syntax on case.. but that's the rough idea
