Correlator in awk

Hi everyone!

This is my first post here.

I have the following problem Smilie.
I would like to calculate the correlator C for this sample file:

#timestep - i #energy - E(i)
1 8
2 5
3 1
4 3
5 6
... ...

What I mean by correlator C(delta) is:
C(delta) = 1/NR sum_i^(NR) E(i)E(i+delta)
where NR is number of records in file and delta is some fixed value.
For example when we put delta=2 the correlator which I would like to calculate is C(2) = 1/NR sum_i^(NR) E(1)E(3).

Thanks in advance for any hints,

jarowit
