Of course, the solution is two sed commands, which gets rid of a superfluous newline as well ... I told you I was new :-)
This leaves me with the question why [\t ] seems to work while [$ ] doesn't ...
but I have a working solution, so no need for philosophical questions.
Franklin52, your awk solution gets the last number wrong.

PURPOSE

ARGUMENTS
N (input) INTEGER
The order of the matrix A. N >= 0.
NRHS (input) INTEGER
The number of right hand sides, i.e., the number of columns of the matrix B. NRHS >= 0.
D (input) REAL array, dimension (N)
The n diagonal elements of the tridiagonal matrix A.
E (input) REAL array, dimension (N-1)
The (n-1) subdiagonal elements of the tridiagonal matrix A.
DF (input) REAL array, dimension (N)
The n diagonal elements of the diagonal matrix D from the factorization computed by SPTTRF.
EF (input) REAL array, dimension (N-1)
The (n-1) subdiagonal elements of the unit bidiagonal factor L from the factorization computed by SPTTRF.
