Hi vbe. Thanks for the reply. That's a good point. In order to do a restore I'd have to connect the tape drive directly to LPAR1 so I can boot from the image on tape. That sucks, but the good news is that this is a temporary backup solution until we reach our goal of using TSM. Basically, I figured this tape drive would be the fastest temporary solution.
Once we purchase Sysback (which is very soon) we will use Sysback to send image backups to our TSM tape library. We will also have a server with Sysback installed and configured with a list of network boot clients. We'll then be able to boot off the "Sysback server" and restore the LPARs from TSM.

Every 3 months we have to do backups (smitth mksysb/lsmksysb + tar) on at least 30 workstations. We have to carry around 2 external tape drives to connect to them. had this p520 server connected to a DDS-3 4mm tape drive...
running AIX 7.1 TL01 -- the latest release.
mksysb -i -e /dev/rmt/1 ..tells me only 1% is done after over an hour ...
I had no problems with th hardware and other connections...

mt - magnetic tape manipulating program
SYNOPSIS
tapename] command [count]

DESCRIPTION
is used to give commands to the tape drive. If tapename is not specified, the environment variable is used; if is not defined, the default
drive is used.
winds the tape in the requested direction (forward or backward), stopping after the specified count EOF marks or records are passed. If
count is not specified, one is assumed. Each EOF mark counts as one record. When winding backwards, the tape always stops at the BOT
marker, regardless of the number remaining in count.

WARNINGS
Only raw, no-rewind Berkeley-type devices should be specified. This type of device will not reposition the tape upon close. An example of

A reservation may only be cleared with a release by the host that issued the original reserve. In the event that the host that holds the
