Not sure but this started working

Code:
for sid in $sids
do
    ORACLE_SID=$sid
    ORACLE_HOME=$(grep $sid $ORATAB_LOC |cut -f2 -d':')
    echo $ORACLE_HOME $ORACLE_SID
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin/sqlplus -s  << EOF
    @$HOME/sql/checkdb-status.sql
EOF
done

only change is indentation of the closing EOF i am baffled why this works
(it is almost behaving like python )

NAME

       suspend - shell built-in function to halt the current shell

SYNOPSIS

   sh
       suspend

   csh
       suspend

   ksh
       suspend

DESCRIPTION

   sh
       Stops the execution of the current shell (but not if it is the login shell).

   csh
       Stop the shell in its tracks, much as if it had been sent a stop signal with ^Z. This is most often used to stop shells started by su.

   ksh
       Stops the execution of the current shell (but not if it is the login shell).
