SYDATE is a psuedo-column that Oracle provides. It is the current date/time.
You can use it to learn how to format a date.
Code:
select to_char(SYSDATE, 'DD-MON-YYYY') from dual;
select to_char(SYSDATE, 'DD-MM-YYYY') from dual;
select to_char(SYSDATE, 'DD/MM/YYYY') from dual;

in sqlplus try "help to_char"
