rsync question (regarding --delete)
Hi there
Does anybody know of a way that i can, instead of issuing a --delete when syncing one directory to another, I can instead somehow receive a list of what would be deleted, but not actually delete it ?
basically, people are occasionally putting files into one of synced folders, but rather than just deleting said file every night when the sync runs (which is what weve been doing up til now), we want to pull these exceptions out, mail them and get them to remove it manually (as they may wish to back it up)
personally id like them to learn the hard way, but the management , they say no
Is this possible with rsync ?

There might be an easy solution to my problem, or maybe not, but here it is.
I am trying to rsync a Volume with 1.5 terabytes of data and send it via fibre channel to a raid array. Now normally when I rsync it scans through everything and, before copying anything, deletes any files that have... (1 Reply)

Hi All,
I am facing problem deleting Source while using the rsync command.
rsync --include=*`date --date="-1 day" \+\%Y\%m\%d`* --include=*`date +\%Y\%m\%d`* --exclude=* --delete-after -auvb -e ssh USER@SERVER:SOURCE DESTINATION

When I try to back up my libraries with

I get error message

rsync with --delete won't honor the delete if the source is something/*. I want the delete to work, but not to delete directories on the target that are peer to the intended directory. For example, using these source and target file structures:

syncer -- file system synchronizer kernel process SYNOPSIS
syncer DESCRIPTION
The syncer kernel process helps protect the integrity of disk volumes by flushing volatile cached file system data to disk. The kernel places all vnode(9)'s in a number of queues. The syncer process works through the queues in a round-robin fashion, usually pro- cessing one queue per second. For each vnode(9) on that queue, the syncer process forces a write out to disk of its dirty buffers. The usual delay between the time buffers are dirtied and the time they are synced is controlled by the following sysctl(8) tunable variables: Variable Default Description kern.filedelay 30 time to delay syncing files kern.dirdelay 29 time to delay syncing directories kern.metadelay 28 time to delay syncing metadata SEE ALSO

The syncer process is a descendant of the 'update' command, which appeared in Version 6 AT&T UNIX, and was usually started by /etc/rc when the system went multi-user. A kernel initiated 'update' process first appeared in FreeBSD 2.0. BUGS
It is possible on some systems that a sync(2) occurring simultaneously with a crash may cause file system damage. See fsck(8). BSD
