so that the INT signals gets propagated to the spawned "sleep" children of each. When I now send a SIGINT to the original parent script, I see that the sleep processes are killed active. I think this solves the problem.

The sleep utility will suspend execution for at least the integral number of seconds specified by the time operand.
OPERANDS

time A non-negative decimal integer specifying the number of seconds for which to suspend execution.
