If your command is something like this:
Code:
compress *

Replace it with
Code:
ls -1 |xargs compress

But if your command is something like one of
Code:
compress *.txt
compress 2009-*

Then you need to first use "find" (for the first example)
Code:

find . -name "*.txt" -print | xargs compress
