Ultra-5's do not support using the serial port as a console?
IIRC correctly Ultra-5's do not support using the serial port as a console, perhaps an Ultra-5 owner may be able to confirm?
I have just found this:
Quote:
To obtain a serial console connection to a Sun Blade 100/150 you will need the following (These procedures will work to an Ultra 5/10 as well):
NOTE: You will not be able to make use of the serial console if the Sun server was booted with the keyboard/mouse plugged in. In order to make use of the serial console, you will need to disconnect the keyboard/mouse and reboot the Sun server. On the Sun Blade 100/150, if the keyboard/mouse are plugged in during the boot phase, all console output will be redirected to the VGA console.
To test your serial cable connection, assuming you do have a monitor and keyboard for the Ultra-5, set the input-device back to keyboard and output-device back to screen, reboot, then edit the /etc/remote file and copy the hardwire line and the one following it, change hardwire (e.g.) to hardware and /dev/term/b to /dev/term/a so you end up with:
Then on the Ultra-5 in a terminal window run "tip hardware" and run hyperterm or whatever on the laptop then what you type on the laptop should get displayed on the Ultra-5 and vice versa.

I have a ultra 2 enterprise server without a video card. I tried to connect my PC to the sun box through console ports using hyperterminal with the standard setting(9600, 8, N, 1) but failed. The cable I used is a DB9 female--DB25 male null modem cable. Using the same setting and cable, I could... (1 Reply)
I'm stuck - when I boot the machine and hit 5 on the keyboard, all I get is an SP login. Can someone give me some tips on how to get to the install via the serial port? (2 Replies)
I have a HP Visualize C200 running hpux that I am trying to boot into using a null modem through com1 from my Sun Ultra 10. I get all the way to the login prompt and then it becomes innactive and wont let me access the machine anymore. Any ideas? (2 Replies)
Hi,
Iam trying to get make a serial connection to an Ultra 10 from my laptop. I've set the output to goto ttya in the nvram parameters. Iam using a db9 converter at the laptop end and a db25 converter at the ultra 10 end-I know the adapters are fine and so is the cable. Iam just not able to get it... (3 Replies)
I am battling to get a V890 up and running. The system appears to have AUTOBOOT=false, so no OS comes up when it's powered on, and I do not have the credentials to get to the RSC management console. Output to ttya serial console ends at "Probing I/O buses", I assume because output is then being... (4 Replies)

SYSTEMD-GETTY-GENERATOR(8) systemd-getty-generator SYSTEMD-GETTY-GENERATOR(8)NAME
systemd-getty-generator - Generator for enabling getty instances on the console
SYNOPSIS
/lib/systemd/system-generators/systemd-getty-generator
DESCRIPTION
systemd-getty-generator is a generator that automatically instantiates serial-getty@.service on the kernel console(s), if they can function
as ttys and are not provided by the virtual console subsystem. It will also instantiate serial-getty@.service instances for virtualizer
consoles, if execution in a virtualized environment is detected. If execution in a container environment is detected, it will instead
enable console-getty.service for /dev/console, and container-getty@.service instances for additional container pseudo TTYs as requested by
the container manager (see Container Interface[1]). This should ensure that the user is shown a login prompt at the right place, regardless
of which environment the system is started in. For example, it is sufficient to redirect the kernel console with a kernel command line
argument such as console= to get both kernel messages and a getty prompt on a serial TTY. See kernel-parameters.txt[2] for more information
on the console= kernel parameter.
systemd-getty-generator implements systemd.generator(7).

Elsewhere)[3].
