I think default =0 is for Solaris OS, default=1 for failsafe, and default=2 will be for windows and we should increase the waiting time for a keyboard stroke by setting, say, timeout=25. Correct me if wrong.

Okay, let me sketch the problem.
I did have a ubuntu / Windows XP dual boot scenario that ran grub as my boot loader. I decided I wanted to try out solaris, so I popped in the opensolaris CD and hit install and told it to format and install over my linux partition.

Read a character from the keyboard without waiting; returns zero if no key pressed and the ASCII value otherwise. This function must not be
used in raw keyboard mode. In this situation use keyboard_getstate(3) or keyboard_keypressed(3) instead.
