Thanks for the quick reply but am not sure if that's what I'm looking for... basically the root environments on the different machines will have different prompts... i need the expect script to recognize the different prompts and execute specific commands for that specific prompt. This is what I have but I don't know how to write it as an if statement.
if the prompt = x then run this command, else run this
Here is the code i have so far and can't find anything on this anywhere:
spawn ssh [lindex $argv 0]
send "su -\r"
expect "Password:"
send "password\r"
expect "#"
send "su - root\r"
send "\r"
expect "hostname1-root#"
send "command\r"
send "command\r"
send "exit/r"
send "exit/r"
exit
expect "hostname2-root#"
send "command\r"
send "totally different command\r"
send "exit/r"
send "exit/r"
send "exit/r"
exit
expect eof

NAME
qmail-control - qmail configuration files
INTRODUCTION
You can change the behavior of the qmail system by modifying qmail's control files in /var/lib/qmail/control.
qmail can survive with just one control file, me, containing the fully-qualified name of the current host. This file is used as the
default for other hostname-related control files.
Comments are allowed in badmailfrom, locals, percenthack, qmqpservers, rcpthosts, smtproutes, and virtualdomains. Trailing spaces and tabs
are allowed in any control file.
The following table lists all control files other than me. See the corresponding man pages for further details.
