i did a lot of ftp programming with c. ftplib works fine for me.
threads are a pain in the ass just use fork() if you need to.

I'm using the following script to automated ftp files to 1 ftp servers
host=192.168.0.1
/usr/bin/ftp -vi >> $bkplog 2>&1 <<ftp
open $host
bin
cd ${directory}
put $files
quit
ftp
and the .netrc file contain
machine 192.168.0.1

./configure script fails to configure libsf. Please check the following last few lines of configure script error.
checking for db1/db.h... no
checking for db.h... yes
checking for dbopen in -ldb1... no
configure: error: No libdb? No libsf.

Pass a long using one of the values from below, to alter how libcurl issues "AUTH TLS" or "AUTH SSL" when FTP over SSL is activated. This
is only interesting if CURLOPT_USE_SSL(3) is also set.
Possible order values:
CURLFTPAUTH_DEFAULT
Allow libcurl to decide.
CURLFTPAUTH_SSL
Try "AUTH SSL" first, and only if that fails try "AUTH TLS".
