Since you're trying to patch the global zone, you should boot the global zone in single user mode. (Assuming you have a serial console with access to the OK prompt).
The scenario we use is something like this. We have a global zone (physical machine) with one or more zones. We boot the physical machine in single user mode. Then mount all filesystems and apply the patch in the global zone. The patch will be automatically applied to the zones as well:
