hi everyone,
We have a heck of a lot of files in a particular directory and I need to search through all of them to find a list of all files containing particular text strings...one being a date and the other being the name of the report that is printed on the files.....

Hello folks,
I have got the following line in my script:
searchstring=".*_1234</MessageTag>"
count=`find /home/mydir/* -name "$1" | xargs egrep -hc -e $searchstring "$1" | awk '{sum+=$1};END{print sum}'`
where $1 is the name of some file that I am passing at run time.

we have a shell script which basically query the Database which retrieves huge data and use the data with "egrep" .
Now there is some data which contains characters like "abc)" and the same is used like below :

I want to create a egrep variable from a file.
For example:
string=`cat query.txt`
cat myfile.txt | egrep "$string"
The string variable file has a list of one or multiple lines
So the end result of:
cat myfile.txt | egrep "$string"
would be:

I want to get the rows from file1.txt whose first column is exactly as the numbers (not subset) from file1.txt. so, i have to read by line from file1.txt and search in file2.txt. So the first column of the output must be the same as the file1.txt.

I want to only grep out lines that contain "appleboy" AND "sweetdeal". however, the closest thing to this that i can think of is this:

ZGREP(1) General Commands Manual ZGREP(1) NAME
zgrep - search possibly compressed files for a regular expression SYNOPSIS
zgrep [ grep_options ] [ -e ] pattern filename... DESCRIPTION
Zgrep invokes grep on compressed or gzipped files. These grep options will cause zgrep to terminate with an error code: (-[drRzZ]|--di*|--exc*|--inc*|--rec*|--nu*). All other options specified are passed directly to grep. If no file is specified, then the standard input is decompressed if necessary and fed to grep. Otherwise the given files are uncompressed if necessary and fed to grep. If the GREP environment variable is set, zgrep uses it as the grep program to be invoked. EXIT CODE
