I'd say try following this HOWTO:
Linux gateway/router - (another) HOWTO
then connect your laptop directly to
re1 to test for internet connection. Once you confirm that your laptop can connect, you can connect your router and configure it properly.
This method allows you to isolate the source of the problem.
