i just did a compiz check from Forlong's Blog - Compiz-Check
here is the results that i got
now that I know that it is the ATI Radeon chip that I have that is causing me the problems, now my question is this. would it be better to get a new video card for the computer or try to get through the problem and keep the Radeon chip? and if i should get a new chip, is there a good chip for under about $75 US of A that is good for linux and is usable for a laptop. i have a IBM ThinkPad T40. all advice would be very much appreciated.

I am on an HP C8000 running B.11.11, I have no idea how to tell what graphics card I have...and the amount of memory it has, driver, etc. Also, how do I tell how much ram the box itself has, and other memory information like swap and processor speed and all that. DESCRIPTION
ati is an Xorg wrapper driver for ATI video cards. It autodetects whether your hardware has a Radeon, Rage 128, or Mach64 or earlier class
of chipset, and loads the radeon(4), r128(4), or mach64 driver as appropriate.
SUPPORTED HARDWARE
The ati driver supports Radeon, Rage 128, and Mach64 and earlier chipsets by loading those drivers. See those manpages for specific cards
supported.
