The cat is useless, of course, and you can combine all those search expressions into one big ole regular expression:

Code:
awk '/EXECUTE/ { start = 1; continue }
/END/ { start = 0; continue }
start && /[Ee]rror|failed|warning/ { print pline; print }
{ pline = $0 }' file

The essential point is that pline captures the previous line when it wasn't printed; and start is true when you have seen an EXECUTE but not yet an END. So when start is true and the regular expression matches, you print the previous line and the current line.

I need to print out sections (varying numbers of lines) of a file between patterns. That alone is easy enough: sed -n '/START/,/STOP/' I also need the 3 lines BEFORE the start pattern. NAME

       END - commit the current transaction

SYNOPSIS

       END [ WORK | TRANSACTION ]

DESCRIPTION

       END commits the current transaction. All changes made by the transaction become visible to others and are guaranteed to be durable if a
       crash occurs. This command is a PostgreSQL extension that is equivalent to COMMIT(7).

PARAMETERS

       WORK, TRANSACTION
	   Optional key words. They have no effect.

NOTES

       Use ROLLBACK(7) to abort a transaction.

       Issuing END when not inside a transaction does no harm, but it will provoke a warning message.

EXAMPLES

       To commit the current transaction and make all changes permanent:

	   END;

COMPATIBILITY

       END is a PostgreSQL extension that provides functionality equivalent to COMMIT(7), which is specified in the SQL standard.
