There are several possibilities, depending on your tar version.
For instance, in my GNU tar 1.15.1, there are an option (have a look at tar man pages) like:
Quote:
[...]
--exclude=PATTERN
exclude files matching PATTERN
[...]
If this is not the case, you may do something like:

Doesn't have to be VI - but I'm better with VI than sed/awk. (8 Replies)

These 2 websites do a GREAT job of explaining different types of wildcards. I learned about the categories of characters which I never knew about at all.

Hi,
I've got a ksh for loop with wildcards specified, and I want the wildcards to be preserved when inside the loop. Instead, it is expanding the wilcards and identifying filenames in the current directory

JUST A SHELL SCRIPT WRAPPER AROUND GUESTFISH
This command is just a simple shell script wrapper around the guestfish(1) "tar-out" command. For anything more complex than a trivial
copy, you are probably better off using guestfish directly.
OPTIONS
Since the shell script just passes options straight to guestfish, read guestfish(1) to see the full list of options.
