Hi,
I dont have an alternative revision of vim(vi is aliased to vim in my system) also i dont have the root access.Also i dont think other program do have similar problems looks so specific to vi/vim

Code:
rpm -q vim
vim-6.2-235.1
 rpm -q glibc
glibc-2.3.3-98.6
 rpm -q gcc
gcc-3.3.3-43.41
