Top Forums UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers How to learn the number of files under a particular folder, containing subfolders Post 302134144 by Unbeliever on Wednesday 29th of August 2007 04:13:02 AM

I'm not 100% sure of what the question. The find answers above count the number of regular files in a particular folder which doesnt appear to be the question.

I *think* this code will give you the answer you seek

Code:
#!/bin/sh

for dir in `find $1 -type d`
do
  if [ "$dir" = "." ]
  then
    continue
  fi

  for file in `find $dir`
  do
    if [ "$file" = "." -o "$file" = ".." -o "$file" = "$dir" ]
    then
      continue
    fi

    if [ -d $file ]
    then
      echo "$dir contains subdirectories ($file)"
      break
    fi
  done
done

Save this to a file, say 'mysearch.sh' and then use is like this:

Code:
mysearch.sh <folder to search>

If this is not what you need then please can you clarify the question, perhaps with a simple example.
