A more general version for one or more words on a line:

Code:
awk '{ for ( i=1; i <= NF; i++)
           {   sub(".", substr(toupper($i),1,1) , $i)  }
            print }' file

use nawk/gawk/mawk as appropriate if awk doesn't work

"; } else { echo "The string $testcase does not consist of all uppercase letters. "; } } ?> The above example will output: The string AKLWC139 does not consist of all uppercase letters.
