Update
What I'm currently trying is the following:
nl="@@^@@"
del="@@;@@"
sed 's/\$nl/\012/' < temp2 > temp3
sed 's/\$del/\054/' < temp3 > temp4
but the first sed call empties the file for some reason and I can't figure out why. Any help would be much appreciated.

ctype_graph - Check for any printable character(s) except space
SYNOPSIS
bool ctype_graph (string $text)
DESCRIPTION
Checks if all of the characters in the provided string, $text, creates visible output.
PARAMETERS
o $text
- The tested string.
RETURN VALUES
Returns TRUE if every character in $text is printable and actually creates visible output (no white space), FALSE otherwise.
EXAMPLES
