Enable PWD command on anonymous FTP?

Hello everyone - First post here,

I'm trying to connect to an anonymous ftp server and I am told by the server admin that I cannot have access to the "print working directory" command. I need to have access to this command in order for my (and my clients) preferred ftp client to connect. (the client disconnects when it encounters the PWD error)

I secretly think that the server admin isn't going to help me out unless I give him specific instructions on how to do this without compromising security.

The bizarre thing is that I can connect to the anonymous root no problem because pwd works in there. . it's just when I change directory to the folder I am supposed to use that pwd doesn't work there. What I don't understand is how the ls command could work and pwd not work. . I don't see how that has anything to do with security.

Can anyone help me find a work around to tell the sysadmin? Any thoughts would be awesome!!

P.S. I did have one idea but I don't know exactly how to implement it. . . If pwd can't work because people in the anonymous user group can't get read access, could I write a small "hello world" program, call it PWD and put it in the path where PWD usually is? That way, it wouldn't have to actually read the current directory, it could just output some text like "PWD is Disabled!" I think that might spoof the ftp clients into thinking that PWD is working.

NAME

       ftpconfig - set up anonymous FTP

SYNOPSIS

       ftpconfig [ftpdir]

       ftpconfig -d ftpdir

DESCRIPTION

       The ftpconfig script is executed by the super user to set up anonymous FTP. Anonymous FTP allows users to remotely log on to the FTP server
       by specifying the user name  ftp or anonymous and the user's email  address as password. The anonymous users  are  logged  on  to  the  FTP
       Server  and  given  access to a restricted file area with its own file system root. See chroot(2). The FTP area has  its own minimal system
       files.

       This command will copy and set up all the components needed to operate an anonymous FTP server, including creating the  ftp  user  account,
       creating  device  nodes,  copying  /usr/lib files, and copying timezone data.  The passwd and group files set up have been stripped down to
       prevent malicious users from finding login names on the server.	The anonymous file area will be placed	under  ftpdir.	If  the  ftp  user
       account already exists, then the current FTP area is used, and the system files in it are updated. All other files are left untouched. This
       command should be run to update the anonymous FTP area's configuration whenever a system patch is installed, or the system is upgraded.

OPTIONS

       -d	Create a new or update an existing ftpdir without creating or updating the ftp user account. Use this option when  creating  guest
		FTP user accounts.

OPERANDS

       The following operands are supported:

       ftpdir	The absolute pathname of the directory under which the anonymous FTP area is set up.

EXIT STATUS

       The following exit values are returned:

       0	Successful completion

       1	Improper usage of the command

       2	Command failed
