First step for Solaris on x86/x64 is a visit to the HCL to see if your harware is fully supported.

A default route is configured by creating a file /etc/defaultrouter containing the ip address of the router (and nothing else). This will take on next reboot, you can use the command

route add default XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX

where XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX is the ip of the gateway to set it temporarily, without a reboot.

16mb of video memory is plenty to run an X desktop, the limitations as to what you can do with it are similar to those you would experience in windows with 16mb: you just can't go to graphically intensive.

I know that Sun make s a version of Solaris for Sparc platforms and also an x86 (Intel/AMD) release of Solaris.
