HP-UX Filesystem backup/restore?
Hi Guys,
I'm not new to UNIX but I am new to HP-UX. I have a proven backup and restore procedue using cpio on Solaris, however, the filesystem structure appears to be different on HP. Can anybody help me with the following questions?
1) What is the best method for performing a full UNIX backup on HP-UX? backup/fbackup/cpio?
2) I am using vxfs on HP 10.20 on a K-Class 9000. Which filesystems need to be backed up? I can see that /tmp appears as a logical volume like the other filesystems, does /tmp need to be backed up?
3) Can anybody point me in the direction of a proven restore procedure as I am not sure which filesystems are auto-mounted on boot of HP-UX and whether or not a bootblk has to be built?
Note: I have searched this site and the docs.hp site to no avail, so I apologise if this is obvious to everyone.

I have several H80 machines, all with AIX 4.3.3. On these machines I have mksysb running for rootvg backups and savevg for non-rootvg backups.

I am trying to do a restore on a backup tape (DDS2) and am having a little trouble. For one, I dont know how the tape was made, whether is was tar, cpio, dump..etc. Anyone know how to restore a tape without knowing the format of the backup? (5 Replies)

The dump and restore commands are missing from this server under SuSE 11.4 for unknown reasons. What is the cleanest way to backup and restore filesystems? Clean means to keep all the original hard/soft links and timestamps. Is find/cpio clean enough?

The files are oracle .dbf format some of which are 5G in size.
I know that tar has got a size restriction of 2G so I cannot use this.

The remote-filesystems event is generated by the mountall(8) daemon after it has mounted all remote filesystems listed in fstab(5). moun- tall(8) emits this event as an informational signal, services and tasks started or stopped by this event will do so in parallel with other activity. This event is typically used by services that must be started to manage remote filesystems. When it occurs, local filesystems such as /usr may not be mounted.
