There is no really great way to do this. ftp send s back as many messages as it wants. It's not like you can count them or anything. When you run ftp manually, you get an ftp prompt when the messages have finished arriving. But there is no way to that non-interactively. My compromise is to wait a few seconds and then inspect the last message to arrive. This is not perfect, but as a practical matter, I can get it to work. Here is some sample code...
Code:
#! /usr/bin/ksh

print -n password -
stty -echo
read PASSWD
stty echo

SYSTEM=ftp
USER=user1
OUTPUT=/tmp/x-ftp$$

ftp -nv >$OUTPUT 2>&1 |&
print -p open $SYSTEM
print -p user $USER $PASSWD
print -p cd tmpooo
sleep 5
tail -1 $OUTPUT | read code junk
if [[ $code = 550 ]] ; then
        echo error on cd
else
        echo cd worked tranferring file...
        print -p binary
        print -p put file

fi

print -p bye
wait
rm $OUTPUT
exit 0
