I'd like to know the differences between hard links and soft links. I've already read the ln manpage, but i'm not quite sure of what i understood.
Does a hard link sort of copy the file to a new name, give it the same inode number and same rights?
What exactly should I do to do this:
I'm replacing the /usr/bin/passwd by /usr/bin/npasswd on over 400 servers. I did a ls -li on /usr/bin/passwd and came up with 5 same inodes, on of 'em being /usr/bin/chfn.
I read the man page on chfn, it's a hard link to passwd.
After moving /usr/bin/chfn to chfn.old, is this syntax correct ( for a hard link?):

I am curious about one thing.
Lets say I have a file file-a to which new generations are created on demand by simply archiving it (ex: file-a.tar.gz) and having the new one created with the same original filename file-a.
Now what I want to know is if I create a hard/soft link to file-a, what... (1 Reply)

and i wrote ln -s blah blah
then i wrote ls
i see red file called blah blah

Hi ,
When installing oracle software a set of directories are created under
the home directories.
Since the home directory is usually not big , i would like to create a soft link

i have create a soft link using below command.
ln -s <filename> <dirmane>where file name i use is t1 and dir name was t2.
i deleted the dir t2 using command rm -rf to remove the soft link .
however again i create a file a using the name t2 and when i just try to link t1 to t2 ... (1 Reply)
I did restore from netbackup for root file system on separate slice instead of corrupted one. After restoration I found there are number of soft link issues lie
e.g
libabcxyx > /mnt/usr/lib
it should be
libabcxyz > /usr/lib

link, unlink - link and unlink files and directories
SYNOPSIS
/usr/sbin/link existing-file new-file
/usr/xpg4/bin/link existing-file new-file
/usr/sbin/unlink file
DESCRIPTION
The link and unlink commands link and unlink files and directories. Only super-users can use these commands on directories.
Use link to create a new file that points to an existing file. The existing-file and new-file operands specify the existing file and
newly-created files. See OPERANDS.
link and unlink directly invoke the link(2) and unlink(2) system calls, performing exactly what they are told to do and abandoning all
error checking. This differs from the ln(1) command. See ln(1).
While linked files and directories can be removed using unlink, it is safer to use rm(1) and rmdir(1) instead. See rm(1) and rmdir(1).
/usr/xpg4/bin/link
If the existing file being hard linked is itself a symbolic link, then the newly created file (new-file) will be a hard link to the file
referenced by the symbolic link, not to the symbolic link object itself (existing-file).
OPERANDS
The following operands are supported:
existing-file Specifies the name of the existing file to be linked.
file Specifies the name of the file to be unlinked.
new-file Specifies the name of newly created (linked) file.
