If you have a -c option for your grep, then it becomes

Code:
count=$(/usr/bin/grep -c \<$itemno\> $BNFILE )

Or better yet, use the exit status of grep to find out if there was a match or not.

Code:
/usr/bin/grep -q \<$itemno\> $BNFILE
if [[ $? == 0 ]] ; then
   echo yes
else
   echo no
fi ;
